NOT YOUR ORDINARY TRUCK STOP

THE SALVATION ARMY PROVIDES FREE FOOD FOR TRUCKERS AT EXIT 233 IN ALBANY IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19

Albany, OR  (May 19, 2020) - During COVID-19, truckers hauling on I-5 have found it difficult to find places to park and get a hot meal for dinner. The Salvation Army in Albany established Truckers’ Table in response to COVID-19 to serve truckers hot meals during this challenging time.

“Truckers have shared with us that acquiring food while on the road has been difficult,” said Lieutenant Charles DeJesus from The Salvation Army in Albany.

One trucker shared, "I literally just told my wife that I was going to do my best to find a meal over the phone - and here you are!"

In six days, Truckers’ Table has served 138 meals and snacks to truckers passing through Albany, Oregon at Exit 233.

Lieutenant Charles DeJesus shared, “One trucker we served asked us for information about Salvation Army shelters, because his truck had been his home during COVID-19. He made a point to eat a Truckers’ Table two nights in a row for a hot meal.”

Truckers’ Table is hosted at Carson Chevron - Albany Branch and hot meals are being served from The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services trailer. Carson Chevron - Albany Branch has also provided employees to volunteer Monday - Saturday until 4pm and water as needed.

This service will continue until Wednesday, June 10.

Since March 14, in response to COVID-19, The Salvation Army across Oregon has provided:

  • Meals: 52,388
  • Beverages: 50,644
  • Snacks: 34,971
  • Food boxes: 37,416
  • Sheltered Individuals: 10,660
