LAUNCH OF NEW HOSPITALITY PROGRAM AT THE SALVATION ARMY FEMALE EMERGENCY SHELTER (SAFES) TO SERVE HOMELESS WOMEN

(November 21, 2019) - Women are the most vulnerable people on the streets. Yet there are so few resources that exclusively address women’s issues.

“The Salvation Army is committed to helping those who need it the most in Old Town in Downtown Portland. In this area of Portland, SAFES is the only resource solely for women experiencing extreme poverty, mental health challenges, addiction and social isolation,” says Rebecca McBrayer, Executive Director of SAFES.

The Hospitality Program will provide basic social services which include hot meals, showers, clothing, laundry facilities, lockers, foot care, and healthy activities that foster community.

As the weather begins to grow colder overnight, these services will be critical. SAFES will have an Open House to give the public an opportunity to experience the new Hospitality Program on Thursday, November 21 before opening for use on Monday, December 2.

The SAFES location includes the following services to meet the needs of women in our community:

Safe Harbor is an alcohol and drug-free, 34 single room occupancy (SRO), 12-month women's self-sufficiency program. Through Case Management and support, women are empowered to overcome individual barriers, build strengths and skills, and obtain permanent housing placement and long-term retention.

Hospitality Program will provide basic social services such as hot meals, showers, clothing, laundry facilities, lockers, foot care, and healthy activities that foster community.
