The Salvation Army delivers ‘sweet salvation’ on National Donut Day

Portland SAFES program 'window of hope' will deliver donuts to hundreds on June 3

Portland, OR (May 27, 2022)- The Salvation Army Cascade Division will honor a special historic day – National Donut Day (Friday, June 3) – by offering ‘sweet salvation’ via donuts as part of 300 to 400 meals passed out five days a week at its Salvation Army Female Emergency Shelter (SAFES) from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 3.  SAFES is located at 30 SW 2nd Ave., in Downtown Portland.

SAFES Business & Operations Manager Kristi Bugge has served at the facility for six years, where there are two staff members and 24 volunteers who work in the Safe Harbor at Fairbridge Program and the Hospitality Program on site.  “A sweet treat is always a part of the meal without fail.  If there isn’t a treat on the plate, they will wait for the next plate,” she said.

Donuts have been graciously donated by Krispy Kreme, Franz Bakery, and long-time partner Whole Foods, who generously offers food and sweets six days a week for SAFES.  Donuts will also be delivered to Portland Metro area first responders and other Salvation Army supporters on June 3.

Major Bob Lloyd, Portland Metro Coordinator at The Salvation Army Cascade Division, said that this annual National Donut Day is an important time to remember the joy and hope of a simple donut.

“Today not only will we be sharing donuts with the first responders of our community who we appreciate so much,” Major Lloyd noted, adding: “But, we will be extending love and joy to the hundreds of residents in our various residential programs as well as those lining up downtown for a free meal at our window of Hope at 2nd and Burnside.”

"The history of National Donut Day dates back to 1917 when The Salvation Army’s hundreds of volunteers, who became known as “Donut Lassies,” fed exhausted soldiers in the terrifying trenches of World War I. “Today, we are mindful of the joy and hope a simple donut can offer to the exhausted people struggling with the terror of homelessness and addiction on our streets,” Major Lloyd said.
