One woman and her children’s story on finding safety and hope highlights October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Unique opportunity to highlight a family, domestic violence survivors, who found much-needed assistance from the largest domestic violence women and children's shelter in Portland – The Salvation Army's West Women's and Children's Shelter.  This is one of the most successful programs to combat a tragic epidemic.  According to The National Child Traumatic Stress Network, approximately 20 people every minute are physically abused by an intimate partner.  This equates to more than 10 million abuse victims annually in the US.

‘Nadia’ shares the very personal journey she and her two daughters made to safety.  Her story will help other women and children find freedom from fear and harm. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IxyN2mhXkw&t=6s

The Salvation Army's West Women's and Children's Shelter is unique because:

  • It's a 60-bed facility that can accommodate just about any size family, from singles to families up to six minor children.
  • The program manages a Permanent Supportive Housing program that pays the rent (off-site) for up to 40 households.
  • The Salvation Army Cascade Division 2021 Impact Report showed 435 people were served at West Women’s and Children’s Shelter that year.

“A safe place to begin again, this is our goal for survivors of domestic and sexual violence at The West Women’s and Children’s Shelter,” West Women’s Director Justin Moshkowski said. “Join with me in the month of October as we take time to uplift the voices of survivors across the nation. We think of and pray for all survivors and their children who have experienced violence in their lives during the month of October.”
