Adult Rehabilitation Center Upcoming Changes Image

Adult Rehabilitation Center Upcoming Changes

Effective September 30, 2019

MEDIA STATEMENT

(Portland, OR) July 29, 2019 – For over 100 years, The Salvation Army has operated an Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) in Portland to provide no fee, six-month residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation services to men struggling with addiction.

In recent years, however, there have been a number of factors which have impacted our program sustainability, such as the expanded access to drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs now covered by the Affordable Care Act. As a result, the Portland area Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center will transition as of September 30, 2019. The Salvation Army will retain the Adult Rehabilitation Center building on Northeast 82nd Avenue, which will be used for other programs in the future.

The long-range goal is to open a new ARC drug and alcohol recovery center to serve the Pacific Northwest region.

The ARC will no longer be accepting men into the program as of July 15, 2019 and will close September 30, 2019. The men who have reached five months of rehabilitation will graduate and those who have not yet achieved five months will have the option to be transferred to one of the other 17 Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers in the Western United States.

Employees of our Portland ARC who do not find other jobs at Salvation Army programs will receive severance pay that is commensurate with their years of service, and outplacement services to help them find other jobs.

The Salvation Army in Portland continues to offer many programs to serve the public from shelters for veterans and their family members to food pantries strategically located across the Portland Metro area.
