Grant from The Home Depot Foundation and VA capital grant allows for expansion at The Salvation Army Veterans and Family Center

Ceremonial Groundbreaking of a multi-million-dollar renovation project to add single occupancy rooms with bathrooms occurs today: Monday, Sept. 12, 9:30 a.m.

(BEAVERTON, OR) Sept. 12, 2022 – The Salvation Army Veteran and Family Center (VFC) will utilize a $300,000 award by The Home Depot Foundation as a part of a multi-million-dollar renovation slated to begin this month.  Renovations will include converting 48 congregate transitional housing rooms to individual rooms with bathrooms.  The ceremony will be held in the front parking lot of the VFC, located at 14825 SW Farmington Rd. in Beaverton.  There will be diagrams of the grant-funded project and time for a Q&A period afterward.  Small group tours of the facility will be conducted as requested.

This renovation will offer formerly homeless Veterans and their family members an updated, energy efficient and safe facility, as well as increased privacy and dignity as they transition to self-sufficiency and permanent housing.

The new grant from The Home Depot Foundation will cover hard costs associated with converting the aging facility to increase the quality of accommodations in service to area Veterans who are experiencing homelessness.

“The Home Depot Foundation is deeply committed to serving Veterans and bringing an end to Veteran homelessness,” said Erica Headlee, Manager of Programs and Strategic Partnerships for The Home Depot Foundation.  “We’re proud to partner with The Salvation Army to ensure more Veterans and their families in the community have access to the supportive housing and services they need to thrive.”

All 70 units at the VFC are reserved for homeless Veterans and their immediate family members.  Three rooms will be 100 percent ADA compliant, and three family units will be fully equipped for those Veterans with children.  This represents another step forward in The Salvation Army’s ongoing mission to combat homelessness among our nation’s Veterans.

Major Rhonda Lloyd, Executive Director of The Salvation Army VFC, said they are grateful and blessed to be a recipient of The Home Depot Foundation and Veterans Administration funds and celebrate these very important partnerships.

“The Salvation Army Veterans and Family Center is privileged to partner with caring individuals and corporations to transition homeless Veterans and their family members into greater stability and independence with dignity,” Lloyd said.  “The generous capital grants from The Home Depot Foundation and Veterans Administration will enable us to improve our facility offering private rooms and bathrooms for each Veteran while continuing to provide life-changing services for many years to come and hopeful futures for the men and women who have served us sacrificially.”

The Veterans and Family Center works in partnership with the Veterans Administration and other community resources to assist Veterans from all branches of the military to improve or establish financial security, permanent housing, self-sufficiency, sobriety, and healthy lifestyle.  Each Veteran receives individualized, intensive weekly case management for 30 days to nine months to assist in accessing community resources and achieving their personal goals.

City of Beaverton dignitaries in attendance include: City of Beaverton Mayor Lacey Beaty and Beaverton Interim Chief of Police Stacy Jepson.  Rachel Carlson, CRS Director of the Veterans Administration, will also be in attendance.
