The Salvation Army and Family Justice Center

partner for ‘Shop with a Cop’

14 youth will ‘Shop with a Cop’ with $150 Fred Meyer gift cards for needed school supplies

(HILLSBORO, OR) Aug. 10, 2022 – For more than a decade The Salvation Army Tualatin Valley Service Center in Washington County has partnered with Fred Meyer and local law enforcement to help youth prepare to go back to school.

This year, the Family Justice Center in Washington County and The Salvation Army have partnered for Shop with a Cop at the Fred Meyer, located at 7355 NE Imbrie Dr. in Hillsboro.  Each youth will receive $150 gift cards and will be paired with a police officer to shop for their back-to-school clothing and supplies.  Salvation Army’s Tualatin Valley Service Center provided funding for the gift cards and Fred Meyer is offering an additional 10 percent discount of merchandise purchased with the gift cards.

Major Bob Lloyd, Portland Metro Coordinator of The Salvation Army Cascade Division, said “The simple act of providing school supplies to students in need provides them a boost in self-confidence and it sets them up for a positive and successful school year.”

Family Justice Center Executive Director Rachel Schutz agrees, adding that the model of the Family Justice Center is collaboration.  This year’s Shop with a Cop program is a perfect example of that mission of community agencies coming together to create a better future for others.

“We are so excited to see this happen with The Salvation Army, Hillsboro Police, and the Sheriff's Office, who invited our families to participate in this wonderful, and much needed event,” Schutz noted.  “For our kids to have the opportunity to warm and supportive experiences with officers, and school clothes purchased for our parents when they need it most; it is a powerful example of creating healing and hope, together."
